2009- 2010  Singing From the Heart

Community Park students’ tee shirts regale the school as, “The Heart of the Community.”  On December 16, 2009, Community Park’s 4th and 5th grade ESL students participated in a cultural celebration which helped to build that feeling of connection with their new home.  The event incorporated both the culture of their native countries and their new, American culture.  Students began by performing traditional American songs for their parents, teachers, and guests.

They filled their Community Park classroom with that Americana feeling, as they crooned old favorites, such as, “I’ve Been Working On the Railroad,” “Erie Canal,” “This Land Is Your Land,” “Home On the Range, “ and, “On Top of Spaghetti.”  Their final song, “Happiness Song,” gave the students myriad ways to demonstrate their new prowess with English.  Students participated in groups, and duets, and finally solos, as they each sang their self-written, personal happiness verse.  Following the performance, the students, families, teachers, and guests shared a luncheon comprised of foods from each child’s culture, Ollie Bollen from Netherlands,Taquitos and Arroz con Leche from Mexico, Madelines from France, and Pollo Guizado and Arroz con Papas from Guatemala were enjoyed by all.  The final treat was American apple pie for dessert!  The event was a success and served to connect our ESL students to their new culture, heart to heart!
